There's Something About Mary

'I'm so disgusted by the idea that they can equate Our Lords image to that of Osama Bin Laden...
Not to mention Our Lady's dress is pink and purple (not blue and white) and she is wearing a Burqa!'
I love the indignation stemming from this person who I believe is either a very devout catholic or just very observant. Really? She's wearing a burqa! WOW I totally missed that.
I guess what I would really like to know is, at what stage did we stop viewing art as art and start demanding it to convey accurate portrayals of truth?
Is it because we must be wary of ultra sensitive religious groups?
A Danish cartoonist draws defamatory cartoons implicating an entire religion as terrorists and the western world says 'you go girl!' to him, cleverly disguised with the words 'Freedom of Speech!!!'
Well the same should apply for this artist lady. She is an artist expressing an idea and making a statement. I fully support her right to do so without receiving death threats.
I like the artwork. I think it rules. 'Our Lady' did cover her hair. Our Lady comes from the Middle East. She was an Arab Jew. Deal with it. I think it's wonderful.
Christianity is not so dissimilar to Islam. They come from the same roots. People need to understand this.
My devout Catholic grandmother can't understand it and proceeded to throw things at the television screen. But then again, she comes from such a different generation, a different place where tensions between Muslims and Christians has been rife for 50 odd years in a country where religion is everything. So I'll excuse her for reacting badly.
I think the average Australian should be mature enough to look at an artwork and say 'well let's see what artistic value this piece can contribute' without first jumping on their pompous high horse Jim and declaring their outrage. Why? Because every other statue you see of Mary that supposedly depicts her in her appropiate attire isn't enough for you, you need to see it an art gallery too?
